Healthy eating habits are easier to adopt if you know this secret.
There’s been a lot written and spoken about building and keeping healthy eating habits. After years of helping people change how they eat, however, I’ve found that a simple but powerful piece of information is often omitted from all of that advice.
Healthy eating habits are habits!
I know that seems obvious, but the simple fact is that most diet plans, weight loss programs, and “quick start plans” forget this. Many of them have people changing how, what and when they eat overnight.
It takes time and practice to build the skills and set new eating habits. Sometimes your brain or your metabolism works against you. (Read “Why changing eating habits can be hard” to find out why that happens and how to address it. )
You want to do this instead to successfully build your eating habits!
This is a simple concept but an important one. When you are building healthier eating habits, you are on a journey to go from how you eat now to how you want to eat in the future. Like any journey, unless you’ve got a magic transporter, you don’t get from one place to another instantly.
Here’s another reason why “Progress, not perfection” works
Diet plans that have you make multiple changes at the same time can also lead you down the insidious path of negative self-talk, self-doubt, and loss of self-confidence. That’s the voice in your head that whispers or screams, “You blew that one!” or similar phrases. Hearing that often leads us to abandon our efforts to change.
“Progress, not perfection” succeeds because it recognizes it takes time and practice to develop new skills and habits that support healthy eating habits.
It encourages you to build on incremental changes instead of berating yourself when your brain reverts to old habits.
So here’s how to start building your healthier eating habits
Assess where you are. (Honestly, but without self-judgment!)
Define where you want to get to.
What changes will you need to make to get there? List them out.
Choose one step that will help you make progress to where you want to go. Read “4 Key Steps To Successfully Eating Healthier For The Long Term” for important tips on how to have success with that step and progress on your way to changing your eating habits.
Remember this important point!
As you progress in your journey of adopting healthier eating habits, don’t expect that you’re going to eat “perfectly according to plan” 100% of the time.
There are times when life gets in the way or when you will get tempted by something really delicious. Beware of beating yourself up when that occurs. Doing so can increase the chances that you will get further off track and abandon your journey toward healthier eating habits.
